On 27 May Institute of Neonatology organized XXXII annual May seminar
named: "Achievements in Neonatology". Over 400 participants took part,
with 6 lecturers from Serbia and abroad. Guest lecturer from Italy was
Prof. Dr Paolo Manzoni, Azienda Ospedaliera OIRM - Sant'Anna
Hospital, Turin. Topics discussed included: antifungal strategies in
neonatal intensive care, use of probiotics in the preterm neonate,
analysis of "skin-to-skin" method of care between mother and infant,
management of monochorionic twin pregnancies, latest results od
application and future perspectives of hypothermia in perinatal
asphyxia, neonatal herpes in Serbia, importance of procalcitonine in
early diagnostic of infant bacterial infection.

babies a year. Their treatment requires urgency; it is complex and long
term. Their subsequent development is not without risks. They need help
from all of us. Help, encouragement and support are necessary for their

On 29 May Institute of Neonatology organized XXXI annual May seminar
named: "Achievements in Neonatology". Over 400 participants took
part, with 7 lecturers from Serbia and abroad. Guest lecturer from
Norway was Prof. Ola Saugstad, Rikshospitalet, University
Hospital, Oslo. Topics discussed included: delivery room handling of
the newborn, optimal oxygenation of the newborn at birth and beyond,
operative approach to necrotizing enterocolitis and results, prognostic
value of different parameters at newborn infants after asphyxia,
influence of perinatal asphyxia on functions of kidney tubules, septick
shock of newborn, testing of respiratory functions parameters in severe
respiratory distress, echocardiographic and biochemical parameters of
heart dysfunction in newborns with perinatal asphyxia etc.
In honor of 90th
anniversary of Institute of Neonatology
a celebratory presentation was organized on 28 May in the National
Theater in Belgrade. A short movie about the history of the Institute
of Neonatology was shown, and a few of numerous guests addressed the
audience, including representatives of Ministry of Health of Republic
of Serbia, representatives of eminent pediatric hospitals and
gynecology-obstetrics clinics. It was an opportunity to remind the
audience of achievements that were accomplished in Institute of
Neonatology, and also to present votive notes to numerous and highly
regarded consultants of Institute, without whom its work could not be
conceived.
On 30 May Institute of Neonatology organized XXX annual May seminar
named: "Achievements in Neonatology". Over 250 participants took
part, with 6 lecturers from Serbia and abroad. Guest lecturer from the
USA was Prof. Kenneth Alexander, MD, PhD, Comer Childrenʼs Hospital,
The University of Chicago Medicine. Topics discussed included:
a systematic approach to antibiotic selection in the intensive care
nursery, antifungal therapy in the nursery, possibilities of invasive
fungal infections diagnostics in neonatology, infection as a cause of
preterm labor, innate humoral autoimmunity in neonates, prevention of
respiratory syncytial virus infection, importance of minimal enteral
nutrition for ESBW newborns etc.

named: "Achievements in Neonatology". Over 250 participants took
part, with 5 lecturers from Serbia and abroad. Guest lecturer from
London, UK, was Prof. Dr Denis V. Azzopardi. Topics discussed included:
development and implementation of cooling therapy for neonatal
encephalopathy, implementation of this method in Institute of
Neonatology, benign strategies for enhancing neuroprotection, methods
and therapeutic agents which represent the future of neuroprotection,
fetal risk assessment etc.
"Crnjanski" System of Education from Belgrade on Thursday, 16 May
2013, handed over a donation in conference hall of Institute of
Neonatology consisting of diapers specially designed for premature
infants. The proceeds for the donation were collected during a
humanitarian event in the school yard of "Crnjanski" High School, by
selling decorated eggs, wish cards, icons and other hand crafts of
school children, with intent to help the smallest babies that need
special care and which spend a prolonged period at the Institute, and
sometimes even several weeks at the intensive care unit.

On 20 September Institute of Neonatology organized VI seminar of
nurses in neonatology named: "Meetings of Nurses in Neonatology". There
were 6 lectures that addressed current topics and issues concerning the
work of nurses in neonatology, and they have attracted a great number
of participants.
On 25 May Institute of Neonatology organized XXVIII annual May seminar
named: "Achievements in Neonatology". Over 250 participants took
part, with 5 lecturers from Serbia and abroad. Guest lecturer from
New York, USA, was Prof. Dr Jacob V. Aranda. Topics discussed included:
the use of caffeine, prevention and treatment of retinopathy,
ultrasonograpy of lungs in NICU, preeclampsia, acute pain during blood
sampling etc.
Institute of Neonatology and Nestlé organized 7th
annual seminar "Nutrition of Newborns" on 21 March 2012. Eight lectures
were presented
to an audience of 300 people, and the topics covered the newest
opinions on nutrition of newborns, initiation of feeding,
contraindications for breastfeeding, interaction of nutrition and
immunity in newborns, specific nutrition of newborns in certain
pathologic conditions etc.
On 20 May Institute of Neonatology organized XXVII annual May seminar
named: "Achievements in Neonatology". Over 150 participants took
part, with 6 lecturers from Serbia and abroad. Guest lecturer from
Würzburg, Germany,
was Prof. Dr Christian Speer.
Institute of Neonatology and Nestlé organized 6th
annual seminar
"Nutrition of Newborns" on 17 March 2011. Eight lectures were presented
to an audience of 300 people, and the topics covered the newest
opinions on nutrition of newborns, in hospital as well as post
discharge, the results of implementation of several types of nutrition
of newborns in hospital etc.
We are proud to announce that at the third International Human Milk
Banking Conference organized by the European
Milk Banking Association (EMBA) which was held in Milan on
16 October 2010, Human
Milk Bank of the Institute of Neonatology in Belgrade
(Serbia) was recognized as a member of EMBA.
New fund raising action for equipping the first Serbian Human Milk Bank
has been organized by the Institute of Neonatology. "Vlasinka"
corporation with its brand "Rosa", a low-mineral non-carbonated water,
joined the campaign to equip Human Milk Bank. From June to October 2010
a part of proceedings from the sale of each 1,5 liter bottle of "Rosa"
spring water will be used for aquisition of another modern freezer for
donor milk storage, as well as a vehicle for bringing milk from donors
to Institute of Neonatology.

named: "Achievements in Neonatology". Over 150 participants took
part, with 6 lecturers from Serbia and abroad. Guest lecturer from USA
was Prof. Dr Rangasamy Ramanathan.
On 7 May Institute of Neonatology organized IV seminar of nurses in
neonatology named: "Meetings of Nurses in Neonatology". Over 250
participants and 7 lecturers took part in it. The gathering was also
addressed by representatives of Serbian Ministry of Health, Chamber of
Nurses and Medical Technicians
of Serbia, Association of Nurses et al.
First Human Milk Bank
in
Serbia and also in the region of
Southeast Europe has been opened in Institute of Neonatology. For many
years Institute of Neonatology had collected surplus human
milk from mothers that were hospitalized alongside their infants and
used it to feed other newborns. Nevertheless this activity was limited
because of the lack of adequate equipment to form a fully functional
human milk bank. Recently with the help generous donations from local
authorities and many companies and individuals the most modern
equipment has been acquired, and human milk bank has been set in
operation in March 2010. Now it is possible to collect, analyze,
pasteurize, deeply freeze and store mother’s milk, and than to use it
for feeding newborns, or to precisely fortify the milk before using it.
Members of Rotary Club
Beograd Metropolitan presented the Institute of Neonatology
with a mechanical respirator of newest generation - Infant
Flow SiPAP, which is a result of campaign by Rotary Club Metropolitan
from Belgrade, with support of Rotary Club Hazel Grove
from
Manchester (UK), as well as football clubs FC "Manchester United" and
FC "Red Star" (FK "Crvena Zvezda"), Belgrade. News in Serbian

On 8 May Institute of Neonatology organized III seminar of nurses in
neonatology named: "Meetings of Nurses in Neonatology". Over 250
participants and 5 lecturers took part in it. The gathering was also
addressed by representatives of Serbian Ministry of Health, Belgrade
City Secretariat for Health, Chamber of Nurses and Medical Technicians
of Serbia, Association of Nurses et al.
On 25th annual May course "News in Neonatology" organized by Institute
of Neonatology, several guest lecturers have been announced. Full

The team of Municipality of Vračar, Belgrade, has taken part in
Belgrade Marathon, and has raised more than 900.000 RSD for
establishing the
first Human Milk Bank in Serbia. Donors who supported the event "We are
running
for babies" bought out the ammount of kilometers that the team of
Municipality of Vračar ran - the total of 195 km.
4th course of Institute of Neonatology and Nestlé "Nutrition of
Newborns" was held. All the participants received booklet material
along with computer software for planning of total parenteral nutrition.
In accordance with financial agreement between the Government of
Italian Republic and the Government of Federal Republic of Yugoslavia
from 2002, regarding the donation for gynecology and pediatric
departments of health institutions, on 20. February Institute of
Neonatology received 10 stationary and 1 transport incubators.
